Filipino singer and actor Marc Dela Cruz makes history by becoming the first Filipino to play Hamilton on Broadway. Born in Hawaii, the Filipino Japanese star made his Broadway debut in 2014 playing Swing in “If/Then” and joined the cast of Hamilton in 2018 playing various roles which included King George, General Philip Hamilton, Tennessee Congressman James Reynolds and more.
1ST GRAMMY NOMINATION FOR LEA SALONGA
Lea Salonga, along with her Once on This Island cast received a Grammy nomination (Best Musical Theater Album category) for their cast album. This is the first Grammy nomination for Salonga who was in disbelief. She admitted in a tweet that she had to visit grammy.com to verify the news.
In the Broadway musical Once on This Island, Salonga plays Erzulie, the goddess of love. The musical follows the story of a peasant girl and a French descended nobleman and the gods that watch over them.
Joining the Once on This Island cast under the Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theater Album category include albums of The Band’s Visit, Carousel, My Fair Lady and Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.
The 61st Annual Grammy Awards will take place on February 10th 2019 at the Staples Center.
Broadway Musical "Allegiance" starring George Takei makes it's Los Angeles Premiere
George Takei’s Broadway musical “Allegiance” will make it's Los Angeles premiere at the JACCC’s Aratani Theatre from February 21st to April 1st; with opening night happening on February 28th.
Directed by East West Players’ Producing Artistic Director Snehal Desai, “Allegiance” is inspired by Takei’s childhood. The musical takes place after the events of Pearl Harbor and follows the lives of the Kimura family, who, along with 120,000 other Japanese Americans are forced to leave their homes. The play is described as “an uplifting testament to the power of the human spirit, “Allegiance” follows the Kimuras as they fight between duty and defiance, custom and change, family bonds and forbidden loves.”
Joining George Takei in the musical will be Elena Wang, Janelle Dote, Eymard Cabling, Cesar Cirpirano, Natalie Holt MacDonald, Ethan Le Phong, Jordan Goodsell, Sharline Liu, Miyuki Miyagi, Glenn Shiroma, Chad Takeda, Grace Yoo, Scott Watanabe and Greg Watanabe.
The Los Angeles shows will be co-produced by East West Players and JACCC by special arrangement with Sing Out, Louise! Productions and ATA.
Performances will take place at JACCC’s Aratani Theatre – 244 S. San Pedro Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012.
